Computer doesn’t power on?

It seems a good number of calls we get day to day have a theme. One issue that is common that we see in the shop is a computer that won’t turn on. Today’s post is about computers that won’t power on. Now, if you press the power button on your computer and you see lights turn on this isn’t for you… call us and ask if that’s the case. These are things you should try if your laptop or desktop will not turn on when you press the power button. Here is a list of things to do when your computer doesn’t make that familiar hum and beep right when you need it the most:

  • For Desktops: Try unplugging and plugging back in the power cable or strip from the back of the computer. I know this sounds dumb but you would feel even worse if we show up and plug it back in for you!
  • Has the machine been recently moved? Check to make sure the power switch is set to on on the back of the power supply. Most are located at the top back of the case and looks like a regular on/off switch.
  • Do you hear a buzzing noise or click when you press the power button? Most likely it’s the power supply. Most power supplies cost about $50 give or take and will set you back a half hour if you bring it to us, or an hour if we come to you. Since it doesn’t take long we offer to check out the computer and do some basic maintenance while we’re out.
  • Make sure the wall socket works. Try another one. It’s unlikely but not impossible that the power strip or outlet just doesn’t work.
  • There is sometimes a little light on the power supply to show it works, and you can see it on the back of the computer next to the power plug. If it doesn’t light up or flickers, power supply is the likely culprit.
  • If someone tells you it’s components other than the power supply, be wary. For less than honest shops this is a way to make some money. It’s possible that the motherboard or other parts went bad, and we see this happen. However, the power supply must always be checked out first. We wouldn’t keep a tech with us if they tell you any different.

For laptops/notebooks:

  • Is there a little light on the power supply (the brick that is between the laptop and the outlet)? Make sure it lights up when you have it plugged into the wall outlet. Try it unplugged from the laptop and just plugged into the wall. If the light goes away when you plug it back into the laptop there is a chance it’s the power supply. We can replace it for you without markup.
  • Is the plug loose on the laptop itself? That plug is called the DC Jack on the computer, and if you look around online you may see lots of people have this problem. Some models are worse than others. If this is the case, there is nothing you can do but have it resoldered or replaced. And just like a dentist, don’t wait. We all pretend it’s not serious until it’s too late, but you’ll pay more for waiting to fix it. Standard DC jack repairs cost about $110-$130, but for serious damage it could be more. Don’t pull on the cord, that’s the best way to prevent this from happening.
  • Pull out the battery and see if it turns on. If this is the case, call us.

There you go! We hope you have enjoyed this mini tutorial and feel free to call us if you need advice or help. We pride ourselves on taking care of you quickly with the service and respect you deserve. 503-616-2841

Virus Protection

Virus Protection is two parts, Prevention and Cleanup. The easiest way to keep your computer virus free is to use safer computing habits, a few tips to keep your computer virus free.

  1. Everyone knows not to download email attachments from people you do not know, but also extend that to websites. If you are prompted to download something and you are not sure what it is do not download it and definitely do not run it.
  2. If you go to a website and it says it found malware/spyware/viruses and it wants you to  click on something to clean them up, chances are the website is trying to install a virus on your computer. You are much better off closing the browser window.
  3. Use a secure web browser like FireFox or Google Chrome. I prefer FireFox which can be had at www.getfirefox.com it has all the functionality of internet explorer with the advantage that you can use plug-ins like adblock to get rid of popup adds and a lot of banner advertisements.

A few words on anti virus software, there are many kinds of software to choose from. Your computer should have an antivirus program of some kind, many have it installed at the factory. The default antivirus programs are not my first choice in protection (mcaffee and norton are the usual ones).

We at Bolt Computer recommend Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast Anti virus, both are free and do not slow your computer down. If you make the switch make sure you uninstall your old anti virus program first. The best way to uninstall is to use an anti virus removal tool which is supplied by the anti virus manufacturer, search for it on their website.

Motherboard Repair

Motherboard Repair

The motherboard is the central printed circuit board (PCB) in most modern computers and it holds many of the crucial components of the system, and provides connectors for other peripherals. The motherboard is sometimes alternatively known as the main board, system board, or on Apple computers the logic board.

Motherboard and its components

Motherboard and its components

Most computer motherboards produced today are designed for IBM-compatible computers, which currently account for about 90% of global PC sales.
A motherboard is like the nervous system of the computer as it provides the electrical connections by which the other components of the system
communicate. If you motherboard goes down your whole computer will go down.
While it may be difficult for you to diagnose whether or not the issues you are experiencing are caused by a problem with your motherboard, our technicians
will be able to diagnose the problem and repair or replace the parts that are damaged.

Helpful information about Motherboards

A typical motherboard of 2009 will have a different number of connections depending on its standard.

A standard ATX motherboard will typically have 1x PCI-E 16x connection for a graphics card, 2x PCI slots for various expansion cards, and 1x PCI-E 1x
(which will eventually supersede PCI). A standard EATX motherboard will have 1x PCI-E 16x connection for a graphics card, and a varying number of PCI
and PCI-E 1x slots. It can sometimes also have a PCI-E 4x slot. (This varies between brands and models.)

Some motherboards have 2x PCI-E 16x slots, to allow more than 2 monitors without special hardware, or use a special graphics technology called SLI
(for Nvidia) and Crossfire (for ATI). These allow 2 graphics cards to be linked together, to allow better performance in intensive graphical computing
tasks, such as gaming and video editing.

As of 2007, virtually all motherboards come with at least 4x USB ports on the rear, with at least 2 connections on the board internally for wiring
additional front ports that are built into the computer’s case. Ethernet is also included now. This is a standard networking cable for connecting
the computer to a network or a modem. A sound chip is always included on the motherboard, to allow sound output without the need for any extra
components. This allows computers to be far more multimedia-based than before. Cheaper machines now often have their graphics chip built into the
motherboard rather than a separate card.

Hard Drive Repair

Hard Drive Repair and Data Recovery

hard-disk-repair

Sometimes hearing strange grinding and thrashing noises means your drive is beyond repair. If you notice these sounds back up important files immediately. If this is happening it could be caused by the hard drives internal components grinding against each other. If this is happening you need to act quickly or risk loss of all of your data.
Disappearing Data and Disk Errors

If your computer won’t let you save a document or you’re sure that you had a file on your desktop yesterday that’s nowhere to be seen today you may have a hard drive issue. Another telltale sign that your hard drive is about to fail is when programs that always worked suddenly stop working and ask where a file it depends on is stored. These are all potential signs that your hard drive is on its way out. There is always the possibility of user error; you might have mistakenly moved vital program files or the file that you thought you saved to the desktop is actually in your documents folder. It could even be caused by a virus eating up your files. Try to rule out these other possible issues before replacing your hard drive but backup your files anyway just in case.
Your computer stops recognizing your drive

If your computer no longer recognizes your drive or cant load the operating system chances are there is a problem with the hard drive. A good way to test this is by plugging your hard drive into a different computer and if it doesn’t work then its the hard drive.
Computer Crashes

Does your computer regularly go to a blue-screen or suddenly reboot? Does it crash often, especially when booting your operating system? If your computer is crashing, especially at times when the computers is accessing files (such as during the boot sequence), it may indicate a problem with your drive.
Really Slow Access Times

If it takes an unusual amount of time to open files, transfer files or delete files there could be an issue with your hard drive. This problem typically indicates a hard drive failure will occur within a month or two. If you have this issue and the hard drive does not fail you may need to reformat your hard drive with a fresh operating system.

Overall sound is the best indicator for a failing hard drive. As soon as you notice a change in sound power down and consult a professional. If the noise is only slightly worse you might try to backup your files on a DVD, CD or external hard drive and then power down. But if the grinding and clicking noises get louder power down and call someone for help.
